Neil Bonnett

Neil Bonnett won 18 Cup Series races and earned 20 poles across 361 starts, establishing himself as one of the most talented and popular drivers of the 1980s before a series of devastating crashes and a tragic death at Daytona in 1994 cut short a career that still had chapters left to write. The Hueytown, Alabama native was a member of the legendary Alabama Gang alongside Bobby and Donnie Allison. Bonnett's driving talent was evident from his earliest Cup starts, and his victories at tracks ranging from Darlington to Richmond to Atlanta showcased a versatility that made him competitive on any surface. His personality was equally compelling -- warm, funny, and articulate, Bonnett was one of the first NASCAR drivers to successfully cross over into television broadcasting. A horrific crash at Charlotte in 1990 left him with amnesia and effectively ended his full-time racing career. After a three-year absence, Bonnett attempted a comeback at the 1994 Daytona 500 but was killed in a practice crash, a loss that devastated the racing community and particularly close friend Dale Earnhardt.
