Wendell Scott
About Wendell Scott
Wendell Scott broke barriers that should never have existed in the first place, and he did it with a courage that extended far beyond the racetrack. The Danville, Virginia native was the first African American to win a Cup Series race, capturing the checkered flag at Jacksonville Speedway in 1963, and the first Black driver to race full-time in NASCAR's premier series, competing from 1961 to 1973. Scott's victory at Jacksonville was not announced at the track -- officials initially credited a different driver before correcting the results two days later. The injustice of that moment encapsulated the systematic racism Scott faced throughout his career, from threats and sabotage to the refusal of some tracks to allow him to compete. He raced with equipment that was perpetually underfunded and often outclassed, yet his skill behind the wheel allowed him to compete against drivers with far greater resources. Over his career, Scott recorded more than 500 Cup Series starts, a testament to his perseverance in the face of obstacles that would have broken most people. Inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015, Wendell Scott's legacy transcends racing. He opened doors that others would walk through, endured hatred with dignity, and proved through his actions that talent has no color. His story is one of the most important in American sports history, and his courage should never be forgotten.
