Track History

Carrell Speedway in Gardena, California was one of NASCAR's first West Coast homes, a half-mile dirt oval that hosted four Cup Series races between 1951 and 1954. The flat track sat in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, bringing stock car racing to a region that was still discovering the sport. In an era when most Cup races were held on dirt, Carrell provided familiar conditions for drivers who made the cross-country trek to compete in California, though the Pacific coastal climate made the dirt behave differently than the red clay of the Carolinas. The 1951 race at Carrell was one of the earliest Cup events held west of the Rocky Mountains, a milestone in the sport's geographic expansion. Local hotshots mixed with traveling professionals, creating fields that blended West Coast open-wheel talent with Eastern stock car expertise. Carrell Speedway eventually gave way to development, as Gardena grew from a small town into part of greater Los Angeles, but those four races marked the beginning of NASCAR's enduring relationship with Southern California.
