Track History

The EchoPark Speedway — formerly Atlanta Motor Speedway — that exists today bears little resemblance to the one that hosted its first Cup race in 1960. When NASCAR reconfigured the 1.54-mile oval in 2022 with steeper 28-degree banking and a narrower racing surface, it transformed a tire-wear intermediate into something altogether different — a superspeedway in disguise. The new Atlanta produces pack racing at 190 mph, with cars drafting three-wide through the turns in tight formation that looks more like Daytona and Talladega than any intermediate track on the schedule. Since the repave, the wrecks have been enormous and the finishes razor-thin, the kind of unpredictable spectacle that divides purists and delights casual fans. Old Atlanta rewarded teams that managed tire degradation over long green-flag runs. New Atlanta rewards survival, positioning, and a willingness to trust the draft on a track half the size of Daytona. The transformation was deliberate and controversial, but it gave this place a new identity — one that ensures every visit produces something worth talking about.

Race Dynamics

Superspeedway

Superspeedways produce pack racing with restrictor plates. Unpredictable finishes are common. Drafting ability and manufacturer alliances are key factors. Wrecks can take out top contenders — drivers with strong superspeedway records and crash-avoidance skills tend to perform best.
