Track History

Champion Speedway in Fayetteville, North Carolina was a quarter-mile dirt bullring that packed enormous energy into its tiny footprint during four Cup Series races between 1957 and 1958. At just a quarter mile around, every lap was measured in seconds rather than minutes, and the close proximity of competitors on the flat dirt surface made contact virtually unavoidable. Fayetteville, home to Fort Bragg and its massive military community, provided an enthusiastic audience for these races, and the bleachers were packed with servicemembers and their families alongside the local racing faithful. The quarter-mile format demanded a specific skill set — quick reflexes, willingness to trade paint, and the patience to pick through traffic without destroying your equipment. Champion Speedway was part of a rich tradition of Carolina dirt tracks that gave NASCAR its identity during the sport's formative years, small ovals in small towns where the racing was big and the rivalries even bigger.
