Track History

NASCAR had never attempted anything like the Chicago Street Course when it closed the roads around Grant Park in the summer of 2023 and sent the Cup Series racing through the heart of downtown. The 2.2-mile temporary circuit ran past Buckingham Fountain and along the edge of Lake Michigan, with the skyline towering over the fencing and manhole covers welded shut beneath the cars. Three Cup Series races were held on the streets from 2023 through 2025, and weather shaped the event's identity from the start: the inaugural weekend was soaked by rain, and Shane van Gisbergen, making his first Cup Series start, sliced through the field in the wet to win the Grant Park 220 in one of the most stunning debuts in the sport's history. Alex Bowman survived another rain-affected afternoon to win in 2024, and van Gisbergen returned in 2025 to win the Grant Park 165 from the pole. The Xfinity Series raced the streets in all three of those summers as well. The street course was a genuine experiment, polarizing and logistically enormous, but it put stock cars in front of an audience that had never seen them and produced images unlike anything else on the schedule.
