Track History

Named for the greyhound racing track it was built alongside, Dog Track Speedway in Moyock, North Carolina was a quarter-mile asphalt oval that hosted seven Cup Series races between 1962 and 1966. The tiny track near the Virginia border packed enormous action into its diminutive footprint, where minimal banking and tight quarters made every pass a negotiation conducted at close range. Seven Cup visits to a quarter-mile track was unusual even in an era when the schedule was heavy with short tracks, and it spoke to the quality of the racing that Dog Track consistently produced. The close proximity of competitors on such a small surface meant that tempers flared regularly and bumpers were used as turning aids more often than most drivers would publicly admit. The Moyock faithful were passionate and loud, creating an atmosphere that was wildly disproportionate to the size of the facility. Dog Track Speedway may have been small, but the racing it generated was as big as anything the sport produced during the 1960s.

Race Dynamics

Short Track

Short tracks feature close-quarters racing with higher caution rates. Aggressive drivers and bump-and-run tactics thrive here. Strong restarts and late-race speed are essential. Track-specific history matters more here than at any other track type.
