Track History
The Indianapolis Grand Prix Circuit is the 2.439-mile road course threaded through the infield of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a layout that lets stock cars turn right on the grounds of the most famous oval in the world. The Cup Series raced the circuit three times, from 2021 through 2023, during the years when the Brickyard 400 stepped aside in search of a fresh identity. The debut was unforgettable for the wrong reasons: a curb in the final chicane began launching cars late in the race, triggering chaos that collected contenders and handed a frantic finish to A.J. Allmendinger, who delivered Kaulig Racing a Cup Series victory. Tyler Reddick won on the circuit in 2022, and Michael McDowell dominated the 2023 race, leading 54 laps for Front Row Motorsports. The Xfinity Series also raced the road course layout during those years, giving the July weekend a full road racing identity. The experiment ended when the Brickyard 400 returned to the oval in 2024, but the Grand Prix Circuit races answered a question fans had asked for decades: yes, Cup cars can race the Indianapolis road course, and yes, it produces drama worthy of the venue.

Race Dynamics
Road courses favor drivers with sports car or open-wheel backgrounds. Rain can dramatically shuffle the field. Qualifying position matters less; overtaking opportunities are plentiful through braking zones and varied corner types.
