Track History

Memphis-Arkansas Speedway in LeHi, Arkansas was a 1.5-mile dirt oval that stands as one of the most audacious venues in early NASCAR history. Five Cup Series races were held on this massive dirt track between 1954 and 1957, and the combination of a mile-and-a-half circumference and an unpaved surface created racing conditions that were equal parts thrilling and terrifying. Most dirt tracks of the era were half-mile bullrings, but Memphis-Arkansas dared to be something different — a superspeedway-sized track on dirt, where cars reached speeds that no one had anticipated and the consequences of a mistake were amplified by the sheer velocity. The flat surface in the Mississippi Delta lowlands offered no banking to assist through the corners, forcing drivers to wrestle their machines through turns that arrived at alarming speed. Memphis-Arkansas was a bold experiment in what stock car racing could be, and those five races produced competition unlike anything else on the schedule.
