Track History

Trenton Speedway in New Jersey was a 1.5-mile oval with a unique kidney-bean shape that hosted eight Cup Series races between 1958 and 1972. The uneven banking — ranging from 10 to 20 degrees depending on the section — created a driving challenge that was unlike any other track on the schedule. Cars had to be set up to handle dramatically different corner profiles within the same lap, a puzzle that rewarded adaptability and engineering ingenuity. Eight Cup visits over fourteen years reflected a track that produced genuinely unique racing in the heart of the densely populated Mid-Atlantic corridor. The kidney-bean configuration meant that the two primary turns had completely different characteristics, and the drivers who figured out how to optimize their approach through both ends held a decisive advantage. Trenton sat within easy driving distance of New York City and Philadelphia, giving it access to the two largest population centers in the Northeast. The track produced some of the most technically demanding racing of its era, a product of geometry that challenged assumptions about how an oval could be designed.
