Track History

Long before Phoenix Raceway became a championship-deciding venue, stock car racing in the Valley of the Sun began on a one-mile dirt oval at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. From 1951 to 1960, NASCAR brought its barnstorming Cup Series to this flat, dusty track in the heart of Phoenix, where four races unfolded under the desert sky on a surface that demanded respect from every driver who entered. The fairgrounds layout rewarded throttle control on dirt that shifted from tacky to slick as afternoon temperatures soared past triple digits. Arizona was still a territory when stock car racing first took hold there, and the fairgrounds oval represented one of the sport's earliest western outposts, a signal that NASCAR's ambitions extended far beyond the Carolinas. The transition from fairgrounds dirt to purpose-built speedways would come later, but those four races in the desert planted seeds that would eventually grow into one of the most important venues on the modern schedule.

Short Track
