Track History

Langhorne Speedway in Bucks County, Pennsylvania was one of the most dangerous tracks in American racing history, a perfectly circular one-mile dirt oval that earned the nickname The Big Left Turn. The Cup Series visited Langhorne during the 1950s and 1960s, and the track's unique circular shape created centrifugal forces and visibility challenges that terrified even the bravest drivers. There were no straightaways at Langhorne — just one continuous, sweeping left-hand turn that never relented, forcing drivers to maintain constant turning input for the entire lap. The track's reputation for danger was well-earned, and the courage required to race at competitive speeds on a circular mile of dirt was extraordinary. Langhorne was eventually paved, which increased speeds and the danger along with them. The track closed for racing in the 1970s, but its legacy as one of the most unique and treacherous circuits in motorsport history endures in the memories of those who witnessed its terrible beauty.
