Track History

Occoneechee Speedway in Hillsborough, North Carolina is a sacred piece of NASCAR history, a track that hosted Cup Series races during the sport's earliest years on a site that is now a historic landmark. The one-mile dirt oval was carved out of the flood plain along the Eno River, and its natural setting gave races an atmosphere that was more county fair than professional motorsport. The flat dirt surface was dusty, rough, and unforgiving, and the drivers who competed here did so with minimal safety equipment on a track where the boundaries between racing surface and surrounding landscape were sometimes ambiguous. Occoneechee was part of the original constellation of dirt tracks that gave NASCAR its identity, venues where the sport was still figuring out what it wanted to be. Today the speedway site is preserved as a walking trail, its banked turns visible beneath decades of forest growth — a quiet reminder of the thunderous competition that once took place in this river valley.
