Track History

The Southern States Fairgrounds in Charlotte, North Carolina was a half-mile dirt oval that hosted an impressive 17 Cup Series races between 1954 and 1960, making it one of the most prolific venues in the sport's early history. Seventeen races at a single dirt track in seven years spoke to the insatiable appetite for stock car racing in the Charlotte market during the 1950s. The flat fairgrounds surface was typical of the era, a rough and dusty oval where the racing was raw, the competition fierce, and the margin for error nonexistent. Charlotte was becoming the epicenter of the stock car universe during these years, and the Southern States Fairgrounds was at the heart of that transformation. The races drew enormous local crowds who packed the grandstands to watch their heroes battle on a surface that rewarded throttle control, mechanical reliability, and a willingness to trade paint. When Charlotte Motor Speedway opened in 1960, it signaled the end of the fairgrounds era, but those 17 races built the foundation upon which the modern sport was constructed.
