Track History

Texas World Speedway in College Station was a two-mile oval that brought superspeedway racing to the Lone Star State for eight Cup Series races between 1969 and 1981. The 22-degree banking in the turns launched cars to blistering speeds on a track that was modeled after Michigan International Speedway, sharing its D-shaped geometry and its emphasis on horsepower and aerodynamic efficiency. Eight races over twelve years reflected a track that produced spectacular competition but struggled to find consistent footing on a schedule increasingly dominated by newer, more modern facilities. The College Station location placed the track adjacent to Texas A&M University, and race weekends drew a mix of Aggie students, regional racing fans, and the curious who came to see Cup cars at speed on the largest purpose-built track in the state. The two-mile layout created racing that was fast, physical, and demanding, with the long straightaways and sweeping corners testing both car and driver in ways that shorter tracks could not replicate. Texas World Speedway closed in 2017, but its legacy as one of the great southeastern superspeedways endures.
