Track History

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Asheville-Weaverville Speedway was a half-mile paved oval that hosted Cup Series races during the era when the schedule was filled with small-town short tracks across the Carolinas. The mountain setting gave this track a character that flatland speedways could never match, with cool mountain air that affected engine performance and elevation changes that made the approach to the facility feel like a journey into racing's heartland. The track sat just north of Asheville in the small community of Weaverville, and its presence reflected the deep connection between the North Carolina mountains and the origins of stock car racing. Moonshine runners had been honing their driving skills on these mountain roads for decades before NASCAR formalized the competition, and Asheville-Weaverville Speedway was a natural home for a sport born from that outlaw tradition. The half-mile layout rewarded car control and mechanical precision on a surface surrounded by the ancient Appalachian peaks that had witnessed the birth of American stock car culture.
