Circuit of the Americas
Austin, TX, USA

Track History
When NASCAR rolled into the Circuit of the Americas for the first time in 2021, two worlds collided in the most fascinating way. This 3.41-mile, 20-turn road course in Austin, Texas was built for Formula 1, and its signature Turn 1 — a massive elevation climb to a blind apex — tests a different kind of courage than anything found on an oval. Stock cars were not designed for this place, and that tension between machine and circuit is what makes the racing so captivating. Road course specialists thrive here, drivers who carry a fluency through braking zones and esses that pure oval racers struggle to replicate. Tire management through long green-flag runs separates contenders from pretenders, as the demanding surface chews through rubber and punishes anyone who overdrives the entry. Heavy braking zones into tight corners create passing opportunities that simply do not exist on ovals — late lunges, switchback moves, and wheel-to-wheel combat through complex sections. COTA brought a new dimension to the Cup schedule, and its presence alongside traditional ovals reflects a sport that continues to evolve while honoring what makes racing compelling.

Road courses favor drivers with sports car or open-wheel backgrounds. Rain can dramatically shuffle the field. Qualifying position matters less — overtaking opportunities are plentiful through braking zones and varied corner types.
