Track History

World Wide Technology Raceway, formerly known as Gateway Motorsports Park, is a 1.25-mile egg-shaped oval across the Mississippi River from St. Louis that earned its Cup Series date in 2022 after years of hosting lower-tier events. The asymmetric turns — wider and more sweeping on one end, tighter on the other — create a driving challenge that is more demanding than the modest dimensions might suggest. The track's location in the St. Louis metropolitan area brings NASCAR to the heart of the Midwest, serving a market that had been without Cup racing since the days of the old Riverside track in the 1980s. The egg shape rewards drivers who can adapt their approach corner to corner, adjusting their line and braking points to account for the different radii. WWT Raceway has proven that a track does not need to be 1.5 miles to produce compelling racing, and the intimate atmosphere of a facility that feels more like a large short track than a small intermediate has been embraced by fans and drivers alike.

Race Dynamics

Short Track

Short tracks feature close-quarters racing with higher caution rates. Aggressive drivers and bump-and-run tactics thrive here. Strong restarts and late-race speed are essential. Track-specific history matters more here than at any other track type.
