Track History

Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, known to generations of fans as Indianapolis Raceway Park, is a 0.686-mile asphalt oval on the west side of Indianapolis that stands among the most beloved short tracks in NASCAR's national series history. The Xfinity Series raced there from 1982 through 2009, and the Truck Series arrived in 1995, making the short track a fixture of the sport's summer trip to Indiana; for years the night races at IRP served as the raucous appetizer to the Cup Series weekend at the big speedway across town. The tight, flat oval rewards precision and punishes impatience, producing the kind of beating-and-banging short-track racing that built devoted followings. After the Truck Series' first run there ended in 2011, the track spent a decade off the national calendar before the trucks returned in 2022, with Grant Enfinger winning the comeback race. The series has raced there every year since, and Layne Riggs delivered a dominant performance in 2025, leading 160 of 200 laps. In all, 49 national series races have been run at the raceway since 1982, and the Truck Series returns again on July 24, 2026, extending one of short-track racing's great traditions.
