New Atlanta lived up to its reputation as a superspeedway in disguise, producing a race that looked more like Talladega than the tire-management affair this place used to host. The pack stayed glued together for the majority of 260 laps, with cars running three-wide through the turns at 190 mph on a track half the size of Daytona. A massive 12-car wreck in Stage 2 reshuffled the running order, and the strategy of those who pitted before the carnage paid off handsomely. The final 30-lap dash featured six lead changes, with the eventual winner using a textbook bump draft from a teammate to slingshot past two cars in the final 500 feet. Twenty-seven lead changes among 10 different leaders told the story of a race where nobody could establish control for more than a handful of laps.
Key Highlights
- • 27 lead changes among 10 different leaders
- • 12-car wreck in Stage 2 collected multiple top-10 runners
- • Winner used teammate push on final lap for the pass
- • Average speed of 167.4 mph, fastest Atlanta race in the repave era
