2026 NASCAR Standings

Cup Series season standings

The 2026 season marks a watershed moment for NASCAR as the sport returns to the Chase format, replacing the elimination-style playoffs that governed championship racing from 2014 through 2025. Under the new structure, the top 16 drivers in regular-season points after 26 races qualify for the Chase — no win-and-you're-in automatic bids, just pure points-based merit. Points reset at the start of the 10-race Chase, with the top seed starting at 2,100 points and seeds distributed at five-point intervals down to 2,000. All 16 drivers race all 10 Chase events with no eliminations, and the driver with the highest cumulative points at the end claims the championship. The finale returns to Homestead-Miami Speedway, restoring the track that hosted so many iconic championship moments before Phoenix took over in 2020. With wins now worth 55 points and no playoff bonus points, the format rewards sustained excellence over boom-or-bust strategies. It is the first non-elimination championship format since Matt Kenseth's 2003 season-long title run, closing a circle that took over two decades to complete. The season took a devastating turn in May when two-time Cup champion Kyle Busch died at age 41 after a severe illness, ending the career of one of the most prolific winners in the sport's history just days before the Coca-Cola 600.
