Track History

Iowa Speedway is a seven-eighths-mile progressive-banked oval in Newton, Iowa that became NASCAR's newest Cup Series venue in 2024. Designed by former Bristol track president Jeff Byrd, the D-shaped oval features banking that varies from 12 to 14 degrees, creating a surface that rewards multiple racing lines through the corners. Iowa spent years hosting lower-tier NASCAR events and earned a reputation as one of the best tracks on the Xfinity and Truck Series schedules before the Cup Series arrived. The relatively narrow racing surface puts an enormous premium on track position and restarts, where gaining or losing three positions in a single corner is entirely possible. Iowa rewards the same skills that define great short-track racing — throttle control, tire management, and the ability to run door-to-door for extended periods without losing composure. Newton embraced the Cup Series with a fervor that reflected years of waiting, and the track has delivered on its promise of producing the kind of competitive, multi-groove racing that fans and drivers both crave.
