Track History

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the most famous racing facility on Earth, a 2.5-mile rectangular oval that has been the home of the Indianapolis 500 since 1911 and became part of the NASCAR Cup schedule in 1994. The Brickyard 400 was a watershed moment for the sport, a validation that stock cars belonged on the same hallowed ground as the open-wheel machines that had defined the venue for eight decades. The narrow yard of bricks at the start-finish line — all that remains of the original surface — carries a significance that no other piece of pavement in motorsport can match. The flat, angular corners and long straightaways create a racing style unlike any other oval on the schedule, where aerodynamic efficiency and horsepower matter enormously and the draft can make or break a race. The Cup Series has raced on both the oval and the road course at Indianapolis, each configuration presenting entirely different challenges. Kissing the bricks after a victory remains one of the most iconic celebrations in all of sports.
