Track History

Chicagoland Speedway rose out of the cornfields south of Chicago in 2001, a modern 1.5-mile tri-oval that was built with the progressive banking and wider corners that defined the intermediate track boom of the early 2000s. It took time for the track to develop a distinct personality — early races produced single-file processions that disappointed fans and frustrated drivers. But as the surface aged and the rubber laid down over years of racing, Chicagoland found its groove. Multiple lanes developed through the corners, long green-flag runs rewarded tire management, and the intermediate-track racing that looked vanilla on the surface began revealing layers of strategic depth. The 18-degree banking in the turns is modest by modern standards, but it demands precision rather than pure speed. Chicagoland's return to the Cup schedule in 2025 brought NASCAR back to the third-largest media market in the country, reestablishing a presence in a region where the sport has always had passionate but underserved fans. The track rewards consistency, clean execution, and the ability to manage a car as the handling changes through a long fuel run.
